A fountain with the sculpture of Hercules

The fountain with the statue of Hercules may be found in front of Špalíček in Krále Jiřího z Poděbrad Square.

The stone basin in the lower part of the second fountain was built in 1606; a wooden sculpture by Petr Eck and painter Heinrich was built on the fountain in 1681. The wooden sculpture was later replaced by the sculpture of a “wide man“, Hercules, leaning against the shield with the coat of arms of the town of Cheb. It is a copy of the sculpture from the staircase of the former baroque town-hall and today´s gallery made by sculptor P. A. Felsner around 1728. The sculpture of Hercules on the fountain was made about ten years later, at least according to the preserved year on the baroque indented pedestal – 1738. We don´t know who is the author thereof whether Felsner himself or someone from his workshop.
