The castle courtyard has always been a communication area, sometimes with a well, connecting different parts of a castle. The same was it in the Cheb castle. Archaeological surveys with a lot of discoveries have changed considerably the significance of this area.

There were discovered remains of a Vohburg castle in the western part, a large burial ground in the eastern part, a well in the middle of the courtyard. Remains of a house with stone stove adjacent to the western wall were uncovered in 1932. It is so called Kuchlhaus called also Gordon´ s house. The Wallenstein´s officers were assassinated in this house at a feast in 1634.

Today, the courtyard of the castle with the adjacent areas is actually a large exhibition area.
