The castle was protected by the shape of the terrain from three sides; the remaining southern part was flat, at the level of the castle. Thereby the access to the castle was determined but also the fortification has been reinforced since it was easy to attack the castle from this side. The first precaution included the digging of a ditch.

The assumptions that the entry to the Vohburg castle was through the gates in the western part or through the bailey in the eastern wall have not been confirmed. In the same way, the existence of a “water path“ on the hillside down to the river has not been confirmed.

The entry to the Stauf´s palatinate was definitely at the place of the today´s gate closely following the Black Tower. The appearance of the gate has changed in the course of time. The last distinct change occurred by building the original gate into the brick fortification which did not add to the beauty of the castle.
