Franciscan Church and Monastery
A vestry and adjacent portion of walling has been preserved from the original building from the mid-13th Century. A cloister of the convent from the 1st half of the 14th Century is one of the most beautiful landmarks in the town’s historical center.
Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary with the Franciscan Monastery
In 1247, written records first mention Eberhart as the guardian (religious superior) of the Franciscan Order in Cheb. The monastery had been already standing when it hosted the bishop of Regensburg visiting Cheb in 1256. Following a devastating fire in 1270, the monastery was rebuilt on a larger ground plan. The church was consecrated in 1285 and it later witnessed the wedding of King Wenceslas II and Guta (Judith) von Habsburg.
Along with the churches in Jihlava and Teplice, it belongs among the oldest Gothic hall churches in Bohemia and Moravia. The preserved church oratorio had been used by the nuns from the neighbouring Clarisse Monastery before their own church was erected.
The monastery had remained in the possession of the Franciscans until their expulsion in 1951. In 1991, the monastery was returned to the church. At present, it is the property of the town. The church serves as the venue of occasional concerts and it is accessible to the public along with the monastery Paradise Garden, which is lined with a Gothic cross-vaulted ambit.
