Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross
Founded in 1856, the congregation arrived in Cheb in 1864. The first four nuns occupied a modest flat in Kamenná Street and they attended the sick. However, as the sisters also focused on educating youth, they presently moved to Hradební Street in 1869. Gradually, the congregation purchased houses on the west side of the street where it mostly opened schools. In the mid 1930s, the schools employed 80 teachers and were attended by 1,200 female pupils. The nuns also worked as nurses at the local hospital and cared for the sick at the almshouse by the road to Pomezí (Myslivna). Under such circumstances, the congregation decided to build a new convent. The new convent with the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross was constructed between the years 1930 and 1932 on the west side of the present-day 17. listopadu Street. The congregation was expelled in the 1950s. Even though the former convent was managed by the Ministry of the Interior (Border Guard) in the subsequent decades, it faced utter devastation only in the 1990s.
