Fresco – House at the Black Bear
The fresco may be found on the House at the Black Bear, namely at the level of the windows on the first floor. The house stands next to the Cheb Tourist Information Centre in Krále Jiřího z Poděbrad Square.
The House at the Black Bear in the town square is first denoted under this name as a publican house in 1669 when it was acquired by Johann Michael Widtmann. The house was mainly known as one of the inns that had served as the gathering place of the provincial assembly. The original paintings on the Early Baroque facade were restored during a subsequent reconstruction. The alleged Renaissance fragment painted on the upper floor wall is in fact a remnant of a fresco depicting a dancing bear with a piper. It was painted by local artist Franz Dietl in 1924 based on the idea of archivist K. Siegl who wished to preserve the memory of the Cheb provincial assembly.
