V. I. Lenin Monument
Today, Lenin’s statue stands in the garden of the Franciscan Monastery.
The 3-metre tall bronze statue of V. I. Lenin created by sculptor Vladimír Reich was unveiled in front of the railway station on 21 April 1979 at the occasion of the 109th anniversary of the birth of the Russian revolutionist. The monument became a ritual site for the local communists. In spring 1990, the statue was removed and transported to the archive courtyard where an open-air museum of the monuments to the fallen idols of the past was being created. Along with the statue of communist journalist Julius Fučík and the border guard with his dog, the statues created a bizarre entry to the Cabinet of Curiosities, which was created from the former Hall of Friendship. A visit to the socialist, political and educational hall was a must for all state organizations during the Communist Regime as it showcased the fruit of friendship with other socialist countries. The original display was complemented with numerous curiosities and memorabilia from the period of the building of the socialist district of Cheb.
