Friedrich Schiller Monumen
The monument may be found in Komenského Park.
To the poet, the creator of the “Wallenstein”, the eminent bard of freedom and the spiritual prince of the German people, to our Schiller, the town of Cheb, more than other towns and cities, has long owed a finer tribute than a plain plaque on a house where this gracious and noble man had dwelled briefly. Fully aware of this obligation, several men gathered towards the end of the year 1890 to draw up a plan for the foundation of a monument that would honour Schiller more adequately. On 1 January 1891, they turned to their fellow citizens appealing for financial contributions.
The money collection was so successful that presently a local artist, master Karl Wilfert, was commissioned to sculpt a bust. He acquitted himself of the task with affection and taste. He finished his work early this year. The selection of the site required lengthy contemplations and finally, the open space in front of the new school was chosen as the best location.
The statue was unveiled on 31 July 1892 at the occasion of the grand opening of the 3rd Cheb Exhibition.
