Trigonometric Point
The trigonometric point may be found at the intersection of the roads leading to Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázně.
The stone with the inscription “Severovýchodní koncový bod” (North-Eastern End Point) was carved into the stone by the officers of the Military Geographic Institute in 1873. The sign “Základna” (Baseline) marks the basic trigonometric point surveyed near Cheb at the intersection of the roads leading to Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázně. It is the end point of the geodetic baseline surveyed in connection with the third mapping of the area by the army. The baseline length was 4.1883055 km. The trigonometric network was derived from this baseline, which serves for the plotting of planimetric points in maps. The landmark is often erroneously denoted as the stone marking the centre of Europe.
