Joseph Sebastian Grüner
Birthdate: February 16, 1780
Date of death: January 16, 1864
His grandfather Abraham and his father Sigmund were Cheb hatters. He attended the Latin School in Cheb and then he studied law, philosophy, mathematics and history at the German Charles University in Prague. From 1807 until his death, he worked as a criminal and municipal councillor of the city of Cheb. Thanks to his explorations of Cheb, of its people and landscape, Cheb people owe him for preserving their customs, songs, habits and costumes. He met a great poet Goethe in Franzensbad, with whom he was joined in a close friendship for years.
Goethe was also the one who initiated the completion of the document issued by Grüner in 1825.
