Josef Czerny
Birthdate: May 26, 1846
Date of death: September 8, 1910
A significant representative of Cheb musical life and a collector of folk songs.
A graduate of Cheb teacher´s institute, choirmaster and later a honourable choirmaster of the Cheb men´s choir worked in the function of head choirmaster of the German choirs within the Cheb province.
After 1868, Josef Czerny operated in Cheb also as a pedagogue. In the school year of 1875/1876, he taught singing, piano, organs for the church purposes. When agrarian school was established in Dřenice u Chebu, he operated here as a director in the years of 1890-1893.
Josef Czerny wrote himself into the cultural history of Cheb and the Cheb area as an erudite musical folklorist. He was interested in his entire life in the Cheb folk songs. He was both a passionate collector of them and he interpreted them as well. As an author he preferred a choir song production which was influenced by the local tradition. In 1901 he publishes for instance Neue egerländer Volksliederquadrille
