Michael Müller

Birthdate: May 27, 1849
Date of death: May 25, 1914
He was a doctor and a significant Cheb national history and geography collector and researcher. He came from a farmer family. He graduated from the Cheb Grammar School and in 1875, he graduated from the Medical Faculty of the Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague. He was an army garrison hospital doctor during his military service in Prague. He worked as a military Senior Doctor in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1878. After working in hospitals in Prague and Vienna, he opened a medical practice in Františkovy Lázně (Franzensbad), where he became the town doctor in 1890. A number of patients from Cheb attended his practice, as he was a famous and renowned physician. He worked as a Senior Doctor in the city hospital and as a school doctor.

In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Müller was announced national history and geography researcher and collector with a deep interest in history, and especially ethnographic distinctive feature of the Cheb region. During his life, he accumulated rich funds of ethnographic material, with a copious collection of costumes, folk furniture, ceramics and household tools. As a consultant, he was involved in the selection and installation of the exhibition Chebská Jízda at the National Museum in Nuremberg. In 1927, the Municipal Museum in Cheb gained approximately 1,500 objects from Müller’s collection, which became quality foundation of the museum’s ethnographic funds.

He was trying to popularize Cheb ethnography through his lectures and technical articles. He was actively employed in the Association for Cheb Ethnography, in photographers’ association, but also in the Cheban Society in Vienna. (in Ten Scenes from the History of the Cheb Museum, Cheb 2003)
