Memorial plaque – Johann Wolfgang Goethe 3

The object no longer exists
The memorial plaque with a bronze relief of J. W. Goethe by local sculptor Karl Wilfert installed on a rock near the old wooden footbridge in the vicinity of Kachní kámen (Duck Rock) was unveiled in September 1904. Its installation was initiated by the Cheb Beautification Association in honour of Goethe who often roamed through these parts with his friend, councillor Grüner, during his stays in the town between 1821 and 1823. Later, a restaurant for excursionists named Goethegarten was opened at a nearby house. Even though the marble plaque was destroyed after 1945, Wilfert’s relief was saved by the museum. Local academic sculptor Miloš Svoboda made a copy of the relief according to the original and the town of Cheb was thus able to re-install the memorial plaque.
