Memorial Plaque – Karl Siegl

Accessible to the public (according to opening hours)
The marble plaque with the bust of the town archive director, Dr. Karl Siegl was created by sculptor Adolf Mayerl and installed at the occasion of the Karl Siegl’s 90th birthday (although he was only 89 then). The unveiling ceremony took place in the presence of Cheb Mayor Siegbert Schneider on 6 November 1940 in the newly founded memorial hall (present-day archive exhibition hall) honouring distinguished scholars of the district of Cheb. In the 1970s, Siegl’s bust was removed and replaced by the head of the first communist president, Klement Gottwald. The original plaque was covered by a socialist motto. In the 1990s, Siegl’s bust was miraculously found in a rubbish bin. It was remounted in its original place after conservation.
