Memorial plaque – Johann Wolfgang Goethe 1
A large black crystal plaque commemorating J. W. Goethe’s stays at the Golden Sun Inn was installed on the forefront of the house by the innkeeper in the 1850s. The plaque and the inn were destroyed by a fire in 1883. After the fire, the inn and the neighbouring house were pulled down and replaced by a new historicist building of the town savings bank.
At the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its foundation, the savings bank installed a new memorial plaque in honour of Goethe in the bank hall in June 1904. The black stone plaque is decorated with Goethe’s relief portrait by sculptor J. Wilfert and it also contains a text proposed by archivist and imperial councillor Siegl, which commemorates the German poet’s stays at the former Golden Sun Inn. The plaque was installed at a visible place and it remained in place throughout the Communist Regime when the building served as a post office. The plaque had remained accessible to public until 2003 when the building was acquired by the Telecom company. The company presently sold the building to an unknown owner. The building has been closed to the public for several years and it condition is deteriorating. Only the owner knows whether the memorial plaque, which has become the property of the town after its unveiling, is still in its place.
