Memorial plaque – Johann Wolfgang Goethe 2

Accessible to the public (according to opening hours)
In 1899, writer Alois John initiated the installation of a memorial plaque on Grüner’s House in the town square with the following text: “Wolfgang Goethe stayed at this house several times as the guest of councillor Sebastian Grüner.” The Grüner House was in the possession of the well-known Werndl family from 1591 to 1876. In the first half of the 19th century, the house served as the residence of magistrate councillor Grüner and it was frequently visited by J. W. Goethe. The original memorial plaque commemorating Goethe’s stays was removed in the 1980s during the completion of a more than 10-year reconstruction. By mere accident, the broken plaque was found by an employee of the Cheb Museum and placed among its collections. A new plaque was subsequently installed in the hallway, however, with a rather confusing text: “Johann Wolfgang Goethe 1749-1832”. It was apparently hinting at Goethe’s stays at the house during these years. The new plaque had remained in its place until 2003 when a town clerk ordered the redecoration of the hallway with wallpaper and the installation of information boards. The plaque was relocated to a niche where it probably still may be found today.
