Barracks at the Upper Gate
National militia barracks
The barracks in front of the Upper Gate consisted of two complexes of buildings built on the same layout according to the pattern of a Vienna arsenal. In 1886, the first so called national militia barracks were built over a newly established park along the today´s 26. dubna street. Already in April 1892, they are extended by a next building for the corporation on the opposite side of the newly established street Ubikací, today Dragounská street. In November 1894, it was decided to build a similar complex of buildings consisting again of the main sleeping quarters, a hospital, a depot and warehouses and by this way was established so called new national militia barracks, being separated by Kasárna street, which was ceremonially sanctified in October 1895. The army did not leave the barracks until 1990. The original meaningful proposal to utilize all the buildings and to build here a modern set of shops and a sale alley ceased because of a vision of making profit from an uninviting stands marketplace. In 2007 the barracks were destroyed and they were replaced by standardized box supermarket structures.
