Barracks by Bridge Gate
The old infantry barracks in Kasární Square were in such dilapidated state by 1900 that the men had to be accommodated in emergency wooden quarters beyond the town. It was finally resolved in 1909 to build new infantry barracks. The town purchased a plot under Zlatý vrch (Golden Hill) and the construction works started in December 1912. After their finishing in 1914 the barracks became the headquarters of the 73rd regiment. The 5th battalion of border jägers (riflemen) resided there after 1918. The barracks were abandoned after 1990. Due to twelve years of Military Accommodation Management’s administration and the transfer to the ownership of the town of Cheb in 2002 with the condition of not using the barracks for business purposes for the next 10 years turned the buildings into ruins. This interesting set of buildings with Neo-Rococo facades under Zlatý vrch will thus soon disappear from the face of the town.
