Singer’s Hall

The object no longer exists
After the town had purchased the Brühlwiese meadow below the castle in May 1898, it decided to build a singers’ hall for the upcoming singing festival of the local German community. Within a few weeks, builder Josef Turner constructed the first hall with an area of 2,400 sq metres for 6,351 guldens and the hall hosted first singers in August that year. In 1923, at the occasion of the agriculture and forestry exhibition, the hall was reconstructed and a roofed corridor connected it with an adjoining exhibition hall.

In January 1931, a decision was made that a new hall would be built according to the design of architect Otto Schütz for the Sudeten German singing festival that was to take place in Cheb in the summer of the same year. The old hall was pulled down in late February and the foundations for the new hall were built by builder Klarner in March. The own structure from 43-metre wide wooden bearer beams was made by Tektum, a company from Prague, in cooperation with local master carpenter Blohmann. The new hall was 96 metres long, 43 metres wide, and 13 metres high and it covered an area of 4,200 sq metres. The total of 600 cubic metres of wood and 10,000 kg of screws were used for its construction. The assembly of the bearing structure began on 15 April 1931 and the carcass was completed 6 weeks later.

The main entrance from the exhibition grounds had 5 double gates. The hall had 38 entrances in total. Festive blue colour was chosen for the outer coating. The inner structure was not covered and the inner layout facilitated good acoustics. A stepped stage for 3,000 singers was situated by the front west wall and the amphitheatre with benches offered a seating capacity for 6,000 spectators. A half of the overall construction costs of 550,000 crowns was funded by means of a loan. During the war, the hall was disassembled and reassembled at the Cheb airport where it served as a production hall. The hall was destroyed during the bombing of the town in spring 1945.
