Old Hospital
The building continuously serves educational purposes.
Cheb general hospital which has become important for the surrounding areas was dedicated to its purpose in the summer of 1910. Before, since 1839, there was a hospital at the Balthasar Neumann square. It was built up in the period of 1836 – 1839 from the means of the citizens, there was established a special fund for the construction of the new hospital, as well as from the collections and donations, especially from the Chamber Fund. Since 1840, the operation of the hospital was financed only by municipal revenues. However, it was necessary to make an own hospital fund – already in 1844 it reached such an amount that the municipality had to pay only food and fuel from its means. Upon the proconsulate´s decree dated from 26 April 1857, the Cheb hospital was declared as a public hospital institution which resulted in the fact that now, finally, the food costs were paid by the country´s means upon the Ministerial Decree, dated on 4 December 1856. The mentioned decree also stipulated that the Cheb general hospital was given under the supervision of the Cheb district authority. In 1881, this medical institution was extended by building up a building for inflectional diseases at the adjacent plot of land of so called Schäck´ s tower. During the last decade of the 19th century the hospital was not able to serve to increasing demands. Therefore both the Cheb district government and the municipality started to negotiate with the state and land authorities to build up a new hospital.
